Colors for International Marketing Campaign
Question:
I was asked by a client if I know of any "color no-nos" for a global marketing campaign.
Essentially, would using a particular color upset, dissuade, insult any particular culture.
Two answers:
I can’t tell you anything about color “no-no’s” in
marketing, but it has been fairly well established that
there are distinct national and ethic color preferences. An
ad campaign that was “localized” for color might therefore
be more effective.
Certain preferences hold true over a range of nations. For
example, blue is among the most preferred colors worldwide.
Red is said to be especially good for attracting male
attention.

The color question is a very good one.
Colors must be chosen very carefully. For example, in Japan white is commonly associated with mourning where as in the UK it would be black. In China red is auspicious, in the US it would be seen as the color of aggression. In Africa certain colors represent different tribes. In the Middle East green is associated with Islam. In India yellow means prosperity. Even though we don't know it, many of us associate colors with meanings and these changes as we move across cultural borders.
